At 05:18 on a January morning, a power station near Magdeburg fails, and Germany goes cold.
Within days the disaster has an explanation. It was a foreign cyberattack, according to the official account, backed by the confidence of allied intelligence. A government that won power promising strength has begun shutting independent observers out of the records. In Washington, preparations are under way for a military strike in response.
Maksym Kovalenko is at home in the Ukrainian village of Zoryane, sterilizing his newborn daughter's bottle, when the President of the United States calls. Maksym is the engineer and peace ambassador who helped the world dismantle its nuclear weapons, and he is asked to help with the inquiry at Falkenried. He agrees on one condition: his presence must not be used to endorse a conclusion nobody has yet checked. His wife, Kateryna, asks him for a different promise. He must tell her what changes before it becomes something she has to accept.
What Maksym finds at the damaged site is not a smoking gun. It is a set of small, stubborn questions. A receipt certifies parts as new when nobody verified them. An access form would let the supplier silence any observer who disagrees. A sound a veteran engineer heard that morning never reached the screen. And in a warehouse photograph there is a face Maksym has not seen since he was a boy.
In Berlin, Lena Weiss works to keep the inquiry honest while her father hands out heaters to people waiting out the cold. An American analyst discovers that two governments' reports each cite the other as independent proof. A frightened employee comes forward with what her company chose to forget. Kateryna is recovering from childbirth and holding the House of the Unbroken Sky together through the blackouts. Her task is to make sure the right people see the evidence before a decision becomes irreversible.
Somewhere inside the ruined hall, a recorder may hold the true order of events. Reaching it will be dangerous, and the clock on the strike is already running.
The Silent Horizon is a tense, humane thriller about what happens when power decides the answer before the question has been asked. It is a story of evidence and of the people who refuse to let it be tidied away, set against the quieter work of a family learning to hold together across distance. It asks how much one honest record is worth, and what it costs the people who keep it.
A Maksym Kovalenko Novel. It follows The Second Horizon.
