Young Cam Williams, raised roughly between the worlds of his black mother’s Baltimore ghetto and his white natural, but secret, father of the Wilmington, Delaware, DuPont set, is determined to rise on his own in his own time. He has phenomenal jazz piano and singing ability that attract figures in the musical world who want to develop his talent: His former arts high school teacher and mentor, Hannah Brandt; the older Philadelphia orchestra conductor, Jordan Smallwood; and music producer Charles Hanson.
Music isn’t Cam’s only talent, though. He is sexy and gay and is earning his keep in a gay-friendly Baltimore hotel as a pianist in the bar who will also go to a man’s room for money.
All of his mentors are interested in him sexually. Smallwood and Hanson pursue him with promises of furthering his career. Williams makes clear he wants to do this on his own, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he will say “no” to either of the men.
