Lake Victoria

Publisher Description

The proposal we have allowed ourselves to make is the following. Due to its altitude and the rapid descent that follows, the Nile Victoria could easily be emptied, deepening the Nile channel a few tens of meters. Thus, almost all the surface that currently covers the lake would be exposed and could be put into cultivation. The fertile volcanic soils of the surrounding countries have had to create very rich lake sediments. The rains in most of it are enough for a good harvest. With the simple emptying of the great lake, a harvest could be obtained in 7 million hectares. This extension is sufficient to produce food for all five East African States, deficits in this area.
By channelling the waters of the rivers that currently form the lake, a second crop could be obtained during the dry season, or the cultivation without interruption. This would create an intensely cultivated agricultural nucleus, similar to Egypt.
In addition, this lake has the advantage that its submerged lands belong to several bordering States: Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya, which have the greatest food problems and an already disproportionate population (* 1984).
