Mockingjay - A Comprehensive Summary

Mockingjay is the third and last installment of the Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. It was published in August 2010, and it immediately topped the bestseller lists of The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and USA Today.
Collins’ father was in the Air Force, and he took part in the Vietnam War. As a result, she understands the ghastly effects war has on humans, and she tries to portray the reality of war through this novel. Collins wants to teach the younger generation about war. She says, “one of the reasons it is important for me to write about war is I really think that the concept of war, the specifics of war, the nature of war, the ethical ambiguities of war are introduced too late to children. I think they can hear, them, understand them, know about them, at a much younger age without being scared to death by the stories.”
Mockingjay is completely cinematic as it contains exciting action scenes. The novel highlights the darker side of war and is very realistic. Mockingjay narrates the rise of a rebellion and sense of freedom garnered by the teenage protagonist, Katniss Everdeen.
Katniss tries to identify herself as a Mockingjay and realizes the deep struggle needed to transform into the symbol of their revolution. She is faced with many questions; for example, who the person she can actually trust is. The novel begins with Katniss walking through ashes, and progresses to see many more deaths in the battle. The characters in Mockingjay struggle to move on with their lives after the war devastates them.
