Publisher Description
For the elegant Phryne Fisher, travelling sedately is not at all what it seems.'Lie still, Dot dear, we've had a strange experience.' But neither the resourceful Honourable Miss Phryne Fisher nor her loyal maid, Dot Williams, are strangers to odd events. When the glamorous Phryne Fisher, accompanied by Dot, decides to leave her delightfully fast, red Hispano-Suiza at home and travel to the country in the train, the last thing she expects is to have to use her trusty Beretta .32 to save their lives. What was planned as a restful country sojourn turns into the stuff of nightmares: a young girl who can't remember anything, rumours of vile white slavery and the body of an old woman missing her emerald rings. And Phryne is at the centre, working through the clues to arrive at the incredible truth before another murder is committed.Fortunately, Phryne can still find a little time for a discreet dalliance and the delicious diversion of that rowing team of young men.'Phryne Fisher is gutsy and adventurous, and endowed with plenty of grey matter.' APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Murder on the Ballarat Train thrusts the reader into the chaos of a horrible crime scene involving an elderly woman and her much-abused adult daughter. But luckily for some (and less lucky for the culprit), the glamorous and intelligent Miss Phryne Fisher—the heroine of a television series adapted from Greenwood’s books—is on the case. This well-heeled, sultry sleuth unravels clues as she flirts with alluring young men, making this book (and the entire series) a delightful guilty pleasure. Author Kerry Greenwood’s description of sumptuous art deco fashion and design fleshes out an airtight mystery that gets more intricate with each chapter.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
The third Phryne Fisher mystery is one of the standouts of the series, effortlessly matching a compelling plot with its irresistible heroine. Fisher and her faithful companion, Dot, narrowly escape death while riding on a train when Fisher awakens to find chloroform fumes have rendered the other passengers unconscious-before succumbing herself. When some order is restored, Fisher and Dot discover that an elderly woman who had been travelling with her daughter is missing. The police inquiry soon finds the woman's battered corpse, and Fisher is retained to solve the crime, doing so with her usual insight, pluck and style.
