Mythos & Logos

Through the centuries, the terms mythos and logos became more distinguish in the opinion of Greeks. After historians like Herodotus, whose best known as the father of history, Greek scholars would segregate this two, by defining mythos as an unverifiable account, and logos as a credible account.
So with the boundaries between mythos and logos being relatively determined, some may think that why would we focus so much on men or creatures that either never existed or if they did, were just ordinary people and animals. For example, we concluded that the legend of Atlantis was most likely inspired by some of the contemporary political and geological events during the lifetime of Plato, and even if we presume that they had actually existed as a historic folk, then they were probably the same sea people who invaded the Mediterranean region in the 13th century BC. So what is the point of hypothesising about them?
Indeed, what is the point? If there was nothing special about the Atlantis and Atlanteans were just another normal ancient folk who eventually faded away; whether they existed or not, why should we bother our selves to think about them? The answer to this questions depends on the perspective of the person who answers to them; some might say that Atlantis could be the key solution to solve some of the oldest human mysteries, like how the late bronze age collapse of civilizations happened or what were the main sources of antiquarian technologies or how all those incredible ancient structures like pyramids or pantheon were built; but still, non of this could be the main reason to seek out for Atlantis, after all this are just hypothesis; the main reason that attracted so many scholars and lots of curios people to find out about this lost land, simply is that this is one of the oldest mysteries of entire history; for over two millenniums, no one has been able to even get close to find out the truth about it.
Basically it is the same for all of the other myths, discovering the hidden history beyond the myths helps us to know ourselves better. For instance, we concluded that the Christian hero and martyr saint George was a real historic figure whose story of martyrdom drastically changed the destiny of Christianity and subsequently the entire history. We also concluded that the Swiss national hero William Tell was not a real historic figure, yet his story had a significant impact on the birth of the Swiss nation, this indicates that how some myths had affected the history of mankind.
Myths are often the main bases of the culture of nations, the define the culture of the most people around the world, and therefore the study of myths is a great way for mankind societies to know the history of their cultural evolution. When Charles Darwin introduced the world with the evolution of human kind, it did not have any particular benefit, but to help the mankind to know itself better, to know “what” it is. Mythos and logos or mythology and history almost do the same job, but instead of showing people what they are, they show them “who” they are.
