Nevernight
This is so far from my usual choice of book & the first
few pages made me think I had made a mistake , but
I persevered & became hooked .
A bit like a very dark ( but humorous) Harry Potter for
grown ups & one of the most entertaining books that I have read this year ( out of 54 so far ).
Thoroughly enjoyed & would recommend .

Never night
Seriously loved this. Best book I have read in ages, in a similar vein to Game of Thrones series. I now have to wait patiently for the next book in the series, sigh.
Mash-up in purple prose turned up to eleven
For some people this will be a five star book. For others, no stars. So I'm splitting the difference.
We have an Arya Stark-alike, complete with tutor and hipster religion. We have footnotes, although these are tedious, unlike Pratchett's. We have an animal side-kick. We have random voyages to far-off places and Adventurer as a job title (really just grave robbers), like a zillion RPGs and web fictions. We have a terribly arch narrator. We have seriously undercooked thinking about systems of government and law. We have kitchen sinks. We have medieval-nostalgia that elides the lice and worms, rotten teeth, cripplingly hard labor, casual violence, chattel status of women, hordes of infants, xenophobia and malnutrition.
