In the summer of 1934, Olivia Otway drives down to the depths of Cornwall and crosses a threshold into a new world. 

She leaves behind the familiarity of Bohemian London theatre-land and steps, an unwelcome guest, into the aristocratic rigidity of Landrake, a house and family haunted by ghosts from the past.

There she meets her new stepfather, Lord Landrake, and his three unhappy, unprincipled daughters. Fearing for the safey of her mother, Olivia uncovers long-gone passions that pollute the present. The revelation of these disastrous secrets threatens everyone now living at Landrake House.
