Norm Smith played 227 games for Melbourne and Fitzroy, kicking 572 goals, in a career spanning 15 years. A four-time premiership player, he then coached Melbourne to six premierships in the 1950s and ’60s, and his extraordinary impact on the game as the coach of th Demons saw him honoured as coach of the AFL Team of the Century. He and Jock McHale are the only two coaches to have been named Legends of the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
