Peveril of the Peak

Sir Walter Scott was a poet, novelist, critic and man of letters, who is recognized as the master of the historical novel.


“Peveril of the Peak” is the historical novel, published in 1823.  Julian Peveril, a Cavalier, is in love with Alice Bridgenorth, a Roundhead's daughter, but both he and his father are accused of involvement with the "Popish Plot" of 1678. "Peveril" is one of the most complicated, in respect of characters and incidents, of Scott's works. The novel is crowded with personages, good, bad, and indifferent, yet all full of vitality and responding to the actual forces which their creator set in motion.
