Problematic Characters

A young tutor in a Pomeranian noble household in the years before 1848 finds every liberal idea he holds tested against the people who employ him. Spielhagen was the political novelist of his German generation and this was the book that made him. This edition carries the complete three-part novel in M. Schele de Vere's translation, with sixty bound plates after painters including Edvard Munch, Wilhelm Leibl and Andreas Achenbach.
