Jake Garber has lived like a hermit during his two years in the witness protection program. He's become comfortable in his new identity and with his life in the small town of Snoqualmie, Washington. The secluded cabin in the mountains provides a safe shelter and distance from potentially nosy neighbors. He's wakened one night by the sound of a crash followed by the blare of a car horn. When he reaches the bottom of his gravel driveway, he finds a young woman slumped over the steering wheel of a badly damaged Chevy and with an infant strapped in a car seat.

Shannon Chase will go to any lengths to protect her daughter from the woman trying to take the child. Certain she was followed from Missouri, she can't trust anyone--not even the stranger who appears to be kind when he takes her into his home.
