Publisher Description

In this rare seventeen century publication, 125 Greek coins are illustrated in 13 engraved plates, accompanied by Latin descriptions and two beautiful maps. One of the maps is of Southern Italy and is comprised of four conjoined folding sheet sheets – it is based on a map from the first modern atlas,Theatrum by Flemish cartographer Abraham Ortelius (1527–1598). Little is known about Prospero Parisio but the editor of the publication, Johann Georg Volckamer (1616–93), was a celebrated physician and scholar from Nuremberg whose scientific research focused on mechanics and optics. The spectacular frontispiece is calligraphically engraved and attributed to Wilhelm Pfann.
