The first episode of the Bigfoot Mysteries blends traditional detective drama and Native American folklore with more common fantasy creatures. Bigfoot Ari Smith and human Ben Cabot are newly minted partners at the Spokane Ecology Board in Spokane, Wash. Their first case, investigating the murders of SEB's previous bigfoot/human team, quickly whiplashes into the darker corners of Spokane's supernatural society of thunderbirds, mud men, skinwalkers, fairies, and foulmouthed pixies. Mutual fish-out-of water introverts Ari and Ben make an interesting team. Ari's awkwardly inconsistent grammar is distracting, and the brisk pace can make it difficult to follow the plot, but readers ready for the challenge will find Blake's story an intriguing take on noir-influenced urban fantasy.
