The Royal family Thellon are attempting to come to terms with their grief over a great tragedy that has enveloped them without warning. This heartbreak has created a power rift in the city of Valderhien that threatens to undermine the entire social system of the Hamaforth Kingdoms. Ernest and Edith Bonaparte, along with a great many others including Immir Hanes, his wife, Lorraine Hanis and many of their friends and associates, all fight to maintain some order within the Royal palace. Victor Chan is still being interred in the dungeons for a gross lapse of judgement on his part. Thankfully, his closest friends come to his defence.

Unfortunately, to add to everyone’s confusion, the reigning monarch, Entell Thellon the Third has issued a decree placing all members of the Appor tribe under house arrest. No matter where the tribe members are, they now find themselves a hunted people, persecuted by those who would profit from such misery. Even Kurt Limmen’s life is placed in great danger by an act that is nothing more than a terrible misunderstanding.

Former British sergeant major, Walter Bradshaw is being held in captivity by the same people who have created so much carnage across the world of Perencore. He steadfastly refuses to aid his captors in whatever malevolent plan they have in mind. In the end he is forced by terrible circumstances to betray a close friend.

In the city of Junnee, Lord Irowan Inbet and Lady Paura Inbet have finally come to terms with the fact that their marriage is finished. For the sake of their children and the stability of the nation of San, they continue to display a united front to everyone. Some close members of their family are aware of the arrangement and do their best to assist them in running the country.

The great disaster that has befallen the Thellon family has created a fallout all the way over in the city of Terrimorter. Under great stress, Ruler Entell Thellon and his spouse, Empress Dara Thellon are now in a state of self-imposed exile and refuse to have anything to do with the running of the Azzil Territories. In their absence, General Herric Samora takes charge of the entire authority, creating an incredible uproar amongst the local dignitaries and bureaucrats in the Imperial palace. Much to everyone’s immense surprise, the imperial couple’s adopted daughter, Herrina Thellon casts the senior officer aside to take charge of the situation. Scott Jones and the other members of the British squad, along with their friend, Kitso all align to try and make some sense out of the situation before it erupts into a civil war.

The endeavour to capture a number of the Apporan horses from the game reserve near the city of Kerroway has ended in success with a great many of the winged animals now interned in Xerous City. Connie York is still attempting to come to terms with a number of issues in her life, including her participation in someone’s death and the fact she is now with child. Unbeknown to her, these problems have now placed her life in the gravest danger.

Jenrin Hul finds that her ownership of the private gaming house is under threat. She is forced to stand up against this attempt to wrest control of the establishment from her. Thankfully, others are willing to stand with the casino owner against whatever peril she faces.

Ricky Sorell and Clary Field organise a night on the town with two of the gaming house’s hostesses. The event is a complete disaster which creates a huge rift between many of the Beyonders and the local soldiers, threatening the stability of the relationship between the two groups.

And in the meantime, a massive threat heads towards the city, ready to unleash disaster upon it and the people dwelling within its walls.
