About the author
Christina was born in 1993 and grew up between London and Glasgow. She studied Law at the University of Cambridge and graduated with a First in 2015. Christina works as a Corporate Litigation lawyer in London. The End of Men is her first novel.

Told through the perspectives of a number of different women, it reveals how we might adapt to such a seismic event—be that through poignant tales of individual lives grieving and rebuilding, or bigger-picture stories of societies and governments re-shaping themselves. Absorbing in thought and detail, this is a book that reflects on misogyny in our own times while also believing in the strength of the human spirit—offering welcome optimism for the post-COVID-19 world.

In Sweeney-Baird's philosophically sweeping and emotionally intimate speculative debut, a viral plague that's first detected in 2025 Scotland kills 90% of the world's men within days of contact. A series of narratives follows major players over the next six years, including Glasgow physician Amanda Maclean, who, after being disbelieved about her treatment of Patient Zero, becomes determined to discover the source of the plague; London social historian Catherine Lawrence, who's collecting stories of the plague while protecting her husband and son for as long as possible; and Elizabeth Cooper, a junior CDC pathologist who is in over her head in representing the U.S. research response in Europe. Smaller vignettes highlight other implications of the situation: a woman takes advantage of the situation to kill an abusive spouse, and an entrepreneur becomes rich through a women-only dating site for those who wouldn't previously have considered dating women. The research side of the story line may feel unrealistic to those with a science background, but the personal politics and gender dynamics are spot-on, and readers will feel connected to the main characters' struggles and resilience. Sweeney-Baird is a writer to watch.

A surprisingly good read
I thought I would be burnt out and unable to read anything pandemic related but this book was a great read. The characters are loveable, although at times can be irksome - some surprised me with a coldness that seems misplaced and others with how much they are described as emotional- one character described as sobbing about seven times. I loved the complex political settings of this book and the perspectives that it covers - like Scotland being an independent republic. Overall an entertaining read
