Good scene setter

This book sets the scene for Pillars of the Earth and other books as it tells the early history and development of Kingsbridge. It is an easy quick read, but that’s because of the predictable story and the lack of depth his other books have.

The characters appear shallow if you are used to Follett’s usual character development. Some key aspects of the story also get ignored or amount to nothing, which is frustrating (eg the numerous references about failing to inform the king of certain events and failure to pay fines).

The story line is somewhat predictable and I would have liked it to carry on a bit longer and introduce us to Edgars children for example. Hardcore fans won’t be disappointed.
