The Fortune Hunter

Complete and unabridged, with 58 full-page plates by Edvard Munch, George Bellows and William James Glackens. Feuerstein of the German Theater company on the Lower East Side — tall, handsome and entirely false — sets out to marry Lena and her savings, and the neighbourhood round Tompkins Square watches the courtship with interest. Phillips was the muckraker whose Treason of the Senate so enraged Theodore Roosevelt that the President coined the word muckraker to insult him, and he was shot dead in the street by a madman at forty-three. This short novel is his cleanest, and the girl is nobody's victim. Fifty-eight plates by Munch, Bellows and others follow the fortune hunter through the streets, harbors and interiors of the immigrant city.
