Arcade is a guardian angel of heaven who begins to read prized books from his earthly charge’s vast library. He steals and consumes thick volumes on philosophy and science, and so educates himself on the history and nature of his own God. Yet his research leads him to an unexpected conclusion: that God is arrogant, tyrannical, and unworthy of the world he created. Arcade denounces the one true God and aligns himself with other fallen angels, who are plotting an assault on the heavenly gates to remove God from power and seat the Devil himself on the throne.
France was a well-known french poet, journalist, and novelist. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1921 for “nobility of style, a profound human sympathy, grace, and a true Gallic temperament.” Multiple political attacks were directed at France’s writing after his death, some of which were voiced by Nazi collaborators. Famous novelist George Orwell defended France from these allegations and continued to support him as a fellow writer.
