The Riverman

In 1872, a river-driving crew battles the elements and a stubborn mill owner to move logs down a Michigan river. Jack Orde, the river-boss, must find a way to break a logjam caused by a dam with a poorly built sluice gate, all while facing the threat of a sheriff and the possibility of violence. The story captures the dangerous work, the camaraderie, and the conflicts of the old-fashioned river-driver, as they fight against time, weather, and the law to get the season's cut to the mills.
