The Robe

Lloyd C. Douglas’s The Robe is a vivid imagining of the aftermath of the death of Jesus, told through the experiences of Marcellus Gallio, a Roman tribune sent to lead the Roman garrison in Minoa, Palestine. While in Jerusalem, Marcellus, with his Greek slave Demetrius, is tasked with arranging the crucifixion of Jesus—through which Marcellus acquires Jesus’s robe.

The Robe was an instant success upon publication in 1942, remaining on the New York Times Best Seller list for several years. In 1953, the novel was adapted into the critically acclaimed film of the same name, staring Richard Burton as Marcellus Gallio.
