Publisher Description
‘Powerful, profound and utterly unforgettable: The Rose Field gives us a stunning trilogy conclusion’ - The Telegraph
The spell-bounding conclusion to Philip Pullman’s bestselling The Book of Dust sequence . . .
‘Lyra: what will you do when you find this place in the desert, the opening to the world of the roses?’
‘Defend it,’ Lyra said. ‘Die defending it.’
When readers left Lyra in The Secret Commonwealth she was alone, in the ruins of a deserted city. Pantalaimon had run from her – part of himself – in search of her imagination, which he believed she had lost. Lyra travelled across the world from her Oxford home in search of her dæmon. And Malcolm, loyal Malcolm, too journeyed far from home, towards the Silk Roads in search of Lyra . . .
In The Rose Field, their quests converge in the most dangerous, breathtaking and world-changing ways. They must take help from spies and thieves, gryphons and witches, old friends and new, learning all the while the depth and surprising truths of the alethiometer. All around them, the world is aflame – made terrifying by fear, power and greed.
As they move East, towards the red building that will reunite them and give them answers – on Dust, on the special roses, on imagination – so too does the Magisterium, at war against all that Lyra holds dear.
'Ablaze with light and life . . . To read Pullman is to experience the world refreshed, aglow, in technicolour' - Independent
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Roses in the desert. Spies and thieves. Gryphons, witches, abandoned cities and a world made terrifying by fear, corrupt power and greed. There’s a lot to love about The Rose Field, even if it wasn’t the conclusion to a story readers have been enjoying since 1995. Because The Rose Field’s Lyra Belacqua has been with us for 30 years, making her debut in Phillip Pullman’s Northern Lights, the first book in the His Dark Material trilogy. Then, Lyra was a spirited semi-orphan, running wild through an Oxford college with her dæmon Pantalaimon ever by her side. Pullman returned to Lyra and the worlds she moved through in 2017 with La Belle Sauvage, the first in another trilogy known as The Book of Dust. Now, with The Rose Field, fantasy-hungry readers can finally discover the end of the tale. Lyra and Pantalaimon are split apart and she is journeying through the desert to find him. Malcom, aware of other danger, has been searching for Lyra. The quests of all three will collide, but there are powerful enemies to overcome. The books that make up His Dark Materials and The Book Of Dust are some of the finest fantasy novels of our time, crammed with eccentric characters, plausible-but-wonderful magic and strange worlds. The Rose Field is a fitting end to the story.
