The model for the farmhouse in the story was Hill Top Farm, in Sawrey, Lake District, the first Beatrix Potter bought with her own revenue. The Tale of Tom Kitten (1907) uses the same setting. With The Tailor of Gloucester, this was a favourite of the author.
