The Uncanny Sign

Dear Mr. Lloyd,
You probably remember me as the rusty PI with mediocre cases. Allow me to change that by sharing my most bizarre case to date!
It all began while I was trapped in my office, mentally that is.
It had been months since I last had a client; so when one finally walked through the door, I didn't question her age nor intentions. She was young, nervous, and uttered very little.
The inadequate office. was soon filled with suspense as she slid over a sealed envelope with an uncanny stamp that lodged itself deep into my conscience. The young girl was quick to vanish into the quiet street facing the building, leaving me with nothing but said envelope.
Before I could ask a single question, a man in black marched into the office demanding the aforementioned girl.
I know what you're thinking, "I bet that mysterious guy turned out to be her father and everything is back in order!"
How naïve of you...
Opening that envelope was but the beginning of a descent to a bottomless abyss. For I've stumbled upon what seems to be an intricate web of mischievous acts.
As the case unfolded, so did something far worse:
the realization that I was no longer just investigating the crime, I was being pulled into it head-first...
