He avoids her because of the strange physical pain he feels when they touch. She avoids him because the way everyone seems to do what he says scares her.
When Claire needs to escape a bad situation, Uriah is her first choice, and he is eager to rescue her. Faced with each other for the first time, both Uriah and Claire find it impossible to listen to their fears and stay away from one another.
They soon find out, though, that there is more than they ever thought possible trying to keep them apart.
When Claire is poisoned by her vindictive father, Uriah’s resolve is tested. Ancient Native American myths and legends spring to life. As they try to keep Uriah from saving Claire’s life, they also begin to reveal the truth behind the lies he has been told all his life.

Disappointing and problematic waste of time
I downloaded this book as part of a quest to find indigenous writers to read. Red flags and alarm bells started appearing part way through when the author kept referring to ancient stories as “myths and legends” that the main characters, who supposedly live in a tight knit Native American community, have disregarded as fairy tales since they were young. This seemed weird to me so I researched the author. I was surprised to see she doesn’t reference a Native American Nation she belongs to, other than claiming to be a “native” of New Mexico. I’m not Native American so I’m happy to be corrected by someone who is, but it seems the author is pulling on cultural concepts she barely understands and that do not belong to her. If cultural appropriation doesn’t bother you, I still wouldn’t recommend this book. The writing is not great. I found myself skimming repetitive boringly written passages to get to the action, didn’t feel at all invested in the teenage romance or the main characters.
