He believes her disappearance might be connected to some kind of Satanic ritual, what with the pentagram necklace found in her bedroom, and that strange, creepy goth kid, Sean, who lives nearby. But does the outlandish theory add up, or is something else at play? Christian White’s Melbourne-set thriller overflows with suspense and suspicion, cleverly using unreliable narrators and well-timed reveals to unravel the story at a gripping pace. The girl’s disappearance brings fear, but also excitement, to the close-knit neighbourhood, and White really captures the essence of each character, particularly when it comes to exposing what’s really going on in these seemingly perfect households. Set in 1989, there’s plenty of enjoyable nostalgia, while the investigations—both Tom’s, and that of the local police—had us holding our breath throughout.
