When anthropologist Winter Barstow reaches mysterious Olympic National Forest, she's obsessed with two things—finding Dr. Gilsdorf, the professor who gave her life direction and learning the truth behind the authentic Native American mask he sent her. She must rely on a somber, dark eyed stranger for answers. What she doesn't know is that the stranger has reason to hate her mentor.  

Native American forest ranger Jay Raven has what Winter doesn't—roots. A heritage he takes for granted. He's loyal to his family and to a career that calls for countless hours alone. He understands the wilderness as only someone who spends much of his life far from civilization can. Who accepts mystical forces. 

All too soon Winter and Jay fear they're falling in love. It shouldn't happen. They have little in common, want different things from life. She'll leave once she learns what happened to her mentor. 

However, there's more to the time they spend together than nights together, her need for answers and his loyalty to what his people stand for. There's the unexplainable wolf howl.    
        And his fear for her life.
