Descripción editorial

Biosensors are products of a newly emerging area of multidisciplinary technologies, which spans biotechnology, molecular biology, material science and microelectronics.
What is a biosensor? Using various definitions of biosensors we can compile one, which emphasises the idea of the contributions from very different branches of science. "A biosensor is an analytical tool or system consisting of an immobilized biological material which converts information about the properties of the analyte(s) into a quantifiable signal via a suitable transducer." This information, in a trivial sense, can be given in the form of different factors, such as, for example, concentrations of biologically active or toxic compounds. Specific data may also be derived, however, such as the concentration of a particular ion or chemical in a medium. The signal generated in a system can involve a variety of physical parameters, but is normally converted to a digital electronic form.
