American notes is a travelogue of the visit to North America by Dickens in 1842. He travelled mainly on the east coast and the Great Lakes area of the United States and Canada mainly by steamship and also by rail. He visited various institutions including prisons, this trip inspired the Martin Chuzzlewit novel.
