With her Spanish holiday at an end and the daunting and dreary prospect of a new term looming over her, a curious discovery in the airport stops her in her tracks.

Trapped inside a toy vending machine and staring out with eyes as black as treacle is a toy monkey imploring to be rescued. Instinctively drawn to the curious toy, Caroline names her Carlotta and brings her back to England.

It it isn't long before the monkey makes an unexpected impact and when Caroline brings her into school, her mysterious new friend triggers a chain of events that change everything.
