Dr. Claire Ames is steadily advancing in her career as an ecologist at the Illinois Center for Biological and Ecological Research. She is excited to attend her first donors’ gala and to meet the community of people that make her work possible. Until a donor dies under suspicious circumstances and the police think she might be involved. When Claire stumbles across more problems at ICBER, they ask her to quietly resign and find work elsewhere. Quickly, she receives a job offer from Indiana Polytechnic in Riverbend and she accepts, relieved that her career hasn’t been short-circuited by her string of bad luck. Until her problems follow her to Riverbend.

FBI Special Agent Austin Warner is well-established in Riverbend, but he finds himself adrift after the loss of his K-9 partner. His work traveling the world on search and rescue missions has ended abruptly, and he’s struggling to determine his next move. When the director of the Riverbend K-9 Academy asks him to use his skills to teach a challenging recruit, he’s sure he’s not ready. But when he sees the hope in the eyes of an energetic Malinois mix, he’s powerless to say no. He begins teaching Delta, a dog with a big heart who can’t be left unsupervised for more than about half a second. However, once he starts training Delta to detect the scent of illegal drugs, she rises to the challenge, and he finally allows himself to believe there might be a brighter future for them both.

When their work intersects, Claire is grateful to have Austin and his adorable dog at her side. Austin accompanies her to check one of her research units on the outskirts of Riverbend, and he realizes exactly how much danger Claire is in. And she has no idea that she’s being targeted.
