«Film Guide for Activists» gives you basic information about approximately 3000 documentaries and fiction films – including fifty-seven 2020 films – related to one or several of the following topics (43 in total):

current global issues and challenges:

▪ environmental issues ▪ animal rights ▪ biotechnology ▪ children’s rights ▪ death penalty ▪ democracy and authoritarianism ▪ financial deregulation ▪ human migration and immigrants’ rights ▪ Islamist extremism ▪ LGBTIQ rights ▪ organ trade ▪ racism and religious persecution ▪ war crimes and crimes against humanity ▪ women’s rights ▪ workers’ rights

indigenous peoples and ethnic groups:

▪ Indigenous Australians ▪ Berber people ▪ First Nations in Canada and Native Americans in the U.S. ▪ Indigenous peoples in Latin America ▪ Inuit ▪ Maori people ▪ Romani people ▪ Sámi people ▪ other indigenous peoples and ethnic groups

ongoing wars and conflicts in:

Afghanistan, China, Colombia, Cyprus, India, Indonesia, Israel, Kurdistan, Libya, Morocco, Myanmar, Pakistan, Palestine, Russia, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, Yemen; and globally: War on Terror

The selection of films has been made over the last nine years by scanning the entire 1900–2020 world production of documentary films and fiction films, picking films based on acclaim and relevance to one or several of the 43 topics covered, with a particular focus on films from the Global South, many of which – no matter how good or important they are – suffer from low online visibility due to the commercial nature of search engines and the recommendatory power of global streaming services; in «Film Guide for Activists» you’ll find a large number of films you’re not likely to come across inside your average commercially constructed Internet bubble or echo chamber.
