FonoCultura is the first series in the LectoCultura collection of books created to support literacy development and cultural awareness in Spanish. Comprised of thirty texts from reading levels A to C, the FonoCultura series provides educators with an ongoing narrative context through which to help students notice and become aware of key word features introduced in kindergarten. Each level contains ten books that not only build upon a storyline by introducing new characters associated with a Colombian ranching family, but also encourage early decoding at the syllabic level rather than by individual sound or phoneme as is found in early readers translated directly from English. In order to explicitly reinforce this decoding, each book begins with two syllable charts and a list of the new words in the story. Also there is a page of comprehension questions at the end of each book to improve the knowledge of the story's meaning.
