One decision, that’s all it was, but it was a decision that changed all their lives.

Door County, Wisconsin 1941

Hazel Allen has spent her entire life growing up along the shores of Green Bay in the quiet town of Ephraim, Wisconsin. Despite the beauty of this quaint little coastal town, Hazel has always craved something more. No longer satisfied by living vicariously through her books, she desires to leave her sheltered upbringing and explore the world. But when she stumbles into a handsome stranger named Thomas, her life is completely turned upside down. The love they share is the type that Hazel has only read about in novels, but unlike her books, their story is not headed for a happy ending. Their whirlwind romance is tragically cut short when Thomas is called to war. In his absence she is faced with one of the most difficult decisions of her life; a decision that could irreparably alter the lives of everyone she loves.

Door County, Wisconsin 1960

Growing up in a small town in northern Wisconsin, life is far from exciting for 18-year-old Ruby, but all of that is about to change. After the death of her grandmother, Ruby stumbles across a box of love letters nearly twenty years old. The letters tell the tragic story of two young lovers torn apart by war, but they also contain a secret that has been kept for two decades. As Ruby unravels the truth, she finds herself falling in love with a fisherman new to town. She discovers that her own love story eerily mirrors that of the young woman in the letters and she realizes that the simplest of choices can set forth a series of events that may have lasting consequences. In order to move forward, Ruby must look to the past and decide whether it is scarier to take a chance and risk everything or to live her life always wondering, what if?
