Trust is usually established from an early age. As infants, we are secure within the knowledge that our mothers will meet our need for food, shelter and warmth. According to Abraham Maslow, who wrote on the hierarchy of human needs, distrust stems from physiological discomfort. As we are distanced from this maternal nurturing we begin to develop distrust in people around us.
