CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION TO SLEEP

In the first chapter of the book, the author writes that not getting eight hours of sleep can have devastating consequences on our bodies. Moreover, he explains that we no longer value a good night’s sleep as we should and that this needs to change. All this causes what the author calls as “sleep-deprivation epidemic.”
According to the author, if we consistently fail to get six or seven hours of sleep per day, our immune system will be considerably weakened. Moreover, less than six hours of sleep per day greatly increases our chances of getting cancer, it can increase our blood pressure and can cause the blockage of coronary arteries. Insufficient sleep is also one of the greatest contributors to anxiety and depression. Moreover, if we do not get enough sleep, our bodies will start to release more of the hunger hormone. This will cause us to eat more and thus to gain more weight. Regardless of the fact that in the most Western nations the most preferred solution for the sleep epidemic is sleeping pills, the author disagrees with this as the best solution.
After the first part, the author writes how the lack of sleep can harm us so much, that it can kill us. There are two potential ways a person can die because of lack of sleep. The first way is a rare genetic disease that starts as insomnia.
