The Tiber River begins in the Apennine Mountains in Central Italy. It flows through Umbria, Tuscany, Lazio and Rome before emptying into the Tyrrhenian Sea near Ostia.
The Tiber carries a lot of mud and silt, which constantly blocks its mouth. It floods often, providing fertile land for agriculture and burying cities. It has also been a dumping ground for executed criminals.
