Gustave Doré’s illustrations
This edition of the Bible is enhanced by 225 splendid tables by Gustave Doré (1832-1883). Doré was born in Strasbourg and lived mainly in Paris. He is considered one of the most famous and prolific book illustrators of the late 19th century. Apart from being an illustrator, he was also an engraver, a lithographer, a painter, and a sculptor. His distinctly epic, dramatic and Romantic style, which was characterized by strong technical virtuosity, ensured him great success. Among his many works the evocative engravings of the Divine Comedy (1868), the Orlando Furioso (1877) and, of course, the Bible (1865) stand out.
