In this adventure novel, young Davie Crawfurd, a Scottish minister's son, encounters a mysterious black man on the shores of Kirkcaple, an event that foreshadows his future. Years later, as an assistant storekeeper in the remote South African settlement of Blaauwildebeestefontein, he becomes entangled in a dangerous plot led by the charismatic Reverend John Laputa, a Zulu preacher who seeks to unite African tribes and reclaim a legendary treasure. Set against the backdrop of the Transvaal's wild landscapes, the story follows Davie's journey from a boyish escapade to a perilous confrontation with a rising native uprising, testing his courage and loyalty in a land of adventure and hidden dangers.
