Robert Harley, a fourteen-year-old squire serving Sir Edmund Mortimer in the early 15th-century, rides with the army sent to destroy the mysterious Glendower and his rebellious Welshman. When the army is defeated, Robert carries the news to London and enters the service of Henry IV’s son, Prince Hal. He goes alone into Wales to find his lord, is captured by Glendower and is forced to choose between his old and new masters.

Bronwen, a young Welsh girl loyal to the English, helps him and his friend Stephen to escape, and Robert survives dangerous adventures before he rejoins Prince Hal. Robert’s courage and loyalty tip the balance between the two princes of Wales, Glendower, supported by the disaffected English nobles, and Prince Hal, fighting to save his father's throne.

About the Author

This absorbing tale is the work of author Mary Drewery who was born on the Welsh border where the story has its setting. Her vivid reconstruction of the circumstances and topography of Glendower's rebellion and the English campaigns is based on her detailed knowledge of the country. She was keenly interested in history and skillfully re-created the historical personages who form the vast majority of the characters of the story, frequently letting them speak the actual words recorded by the chroniclers of their own times.

The stirring quality of these events has been captured in the fine drawings of William Stobbs, who was well known for his strong and dramatic illustrations of books for young readers. He was awarded the Kate Greenaway Medal, given by the Library Association to the artist who has produced distinguish work in the illustrating children’s books.
