Thomas Anstey Guthrie was born on August 8, 1856, in Kensington, London. To the public he is known by his pseudonym F. Antsey. He was an English novelist and journalist, who was most famous for his comic books and stories.

He studied at King's College School and at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, and was called to the bar in 1880. But, the big success of his story Vice Versa made his reputation as a humorist. Later, he became a member of the staff of Punch magazine, in which he was known for his Voces Populi and his humorous parodies of a reciter's stock-piece.

Among his best-known works are: The Black Poodle And Other Tales, The Giant's Robe, The Tinted Venus, A Fallen Idol, The Pariah, A Bayard From Bengal, Only Toys!, Salted Almonds, and many others.
