Beowulf

A dead king is laid in a ring-bright ship, heaped with treasure, and given to the ocean. No one can say who will receive that freight.

From this solemn beginning, the poem turns to Heorot, the Danes’ splendid mead-hall, where harp music and feasting draw a lurking monster from the dark. For twelve years Grendel has stalked Hrothgar’s people, leaving the great hall empty and its king burdened with grief. Across the sea, Beowulf, a mighty warrior of the Geats, hears of the terror and sets out with fourteen companions to help. In a world ruled by loyalty, reputation and the threat of sudden violence, one man’s strength may be the Danes’ only hope. What awaits Beowulf when he reaches the hall after nightfall?
