In 1835, the beautiful French actress Juliette Drouet, aged 29, wrote in a love letter to the renowned poet, novelist and dramatist Victor Hugo: ?It?s my love that will make me immortal. When I am dead, I will love you still. My body and my life will be used up before one particle of my love disappears.? Forty-eight years later when Drouet died after a lifetime of passionate love for the much older Hugo, it had long been clear that the love for him that described in her letters was no exaggeration. Just as she had predicted, it is her love as conveyed in the hundreds of letters in this volume that has immortalized her.
