Memoirs of Sargeant Dale, His Daughter and the Orphan Mary

Mary Martha Sherwood frequently wrote about orphans and religion in her fictional works. In Memoirs of Sergeant Dale, both play a big part in the plot. The novel tells of Sgt. Dale as he travels from the East Indies back to England with his biological daughter and his newly adopted daughter, Mary.
