Publisher Description

Hayward Templeton is a student psychiatrist at Iowa University who gets dragged into playing in a co-ed baseball game. Elected as the team's pitcher, he bones up on the internet the night before and learns how to throw a screwball. His quirky delivery is a success and his team wins. During the celebration however, the team drops him on his head. While unconscious, his classmates discuss an upcoming test on mental disorders. When Hayward comes to, he begins experiencing - unknowingly - one-by-one, an A-to-Z list of various mental illnesses.

Because of his quirky, unhittable screwball, he's recruited by Iowa's baseball coach. The Kansas City Royals immediately spot him and send a scout. The scout books him on plane to the team's AAA affiliate in Memphis … but Hayward suddenly realizes he can't fly. The Royals call in Jenna Wilson, an attractive psychiatrist, to help Hayward. He throws a perfect game next time out and is called up to the big club the next day.

A romance blossoms between Hayward and Jenna … even though Templeton suddenly becomes a cross-dresser. On the hill however, Hayward mows down the major league batters. It's Hayward Mania.

The Royals are making a run for the playoffs and must keep Hayward in the pitching rotation at all costs. They finally commit him to the Mayo Clinic after a bout of male erectile disorder. While at Mayo, they discover the alphabet monster that Hayward is up against. He's experienced 13 disorders and apparently there may still be 13 to come … or another 26?

It's a media circus. America follows Hayward. Templeton has a nightmare where the baseball stadium becomes an arena for a contest between two teams trying to exploit the other team's mental illnesses.

Kansas City makes the play-offs. During a radio interview, Hayward thinks he's Nolan Ryan. Templeton pulls his hair out on the mound. Jenna duly records all as she searches for the cure.

Hayward and the Royals reach the World Series against the L.A.Dodgers. The C.I.A. steps in and takes Hayward undercover because the Secretary of State's kidnapping has gone largely unreported due to Hayward Mania ruling the airwaves 24/7. A tree-hugging activist however, hijacks Hayward from the CIA and takes him back to her tree. Hayward escapes and the C.I.A. - rethinking America's deep need for baseball - takes him to game seven of the World Series.

It turns out that the CIA-tree-hugger escapade was a ruse by the Dodgers to get Hayward out of the Series. Hayward's back … but the Dodgers have one more card up their sleeve, a classmate of Hayward's at Iowa U. - who knows the next mental disorder that will hit Hayward!
