It’s a rewarding move, as this is a darkly compelling story that follows three woman across separate moments in time, tied together by personal circumstance and a connection to the misshapen rock island, off the coast of Scottish homes. Opening in the modern day with Viv, the story jumps to Ruth who moved into the same house post-World War II before lurching back further Sarah—who was accused of witchcraft in the 1700s. A historical framing of the nature of violence against women over tense, flowing chapters, Wyld sketches out her characters with skill and through striking gothic motifs. Not least that titular rock.
