Legate Philip of Orlean arrived in Hammaburg a few days later. All the way, he was troubled by the words of the High Bishop to investigate the causes of the death of young Eva and, along with this, possibly the misbehavior of the Meister of the Order of the Golden Cross.
What worried Orlean most was not the fact that the new spiritual leader had entrusted him with such a task. But the fact that none other than the Landkomtur of the same Order, Eric von Linsburg, reported to the Meister.
As soon as the Legate heard about this, vague suspicions immediately appeared in his head that this whole story was by no means as simple as the Landkomtur presented it, probably ‘thickening the colors’. Perhaps he himself wanted to obtain the status of the Meister... Or, he wanted revenge for the death of Eva...
But whether this is so or not, Philip had yet to find out.
As soon as he arrived in Hammaburg, his arrival was immediately reported to the Meister.
Friedrich, who had been waiting for the Legate for some time, immediately hurried to meet him.
“Greetings, Meister Hogerfest,” Orlean bowed. “I am Philip of Orlean, Legate of the High Bishop.”
“Good afternoon, master Orlean,” the Meister bowed politely in response. “Let me ask you what brings you to Hammaburg?”
“I am here on behalf of the High Bishop Leo of Luxembourg, in order to conduct an investigation in order to find out the causes of the death of Lady Eva Voltingen,” replied Legate, deliberately omitting unnecessary details...

...With relief, she saw a young girl with buckets also came to fetch water. Ladomira immediately recognized Mirina, daughter of the Desyatnik Gorislav, one of those who helped to put the temple of Lada in order.
Mirina recently turned fifteen. Even in the temple, Ladomira drew attention to the young girl, for she reminded the woman of herself. Mirina also felt sympathy for Ladomira and saw her as a senior mentor, whom she could turn for advice.
“Glory to Jarilo, Ladomira...” the girl said timidly.
“Glory...” answered the woman, removing her hand from the handle of the knife.
The girl approached the lake in order to take water. Ladomira noticed that Mirina was greatly depressed.
“Mirina, did something happen to you? Are your father and mother healthy?” asked Ladomira.
The girl hesitated a little, but then shyly replied:
“It's hard for me...”
“Has someone offended you?” Ladomira was worried. “Some of the local men, against your will wished your beauty?”
“No...” Mirina shook her head. “Will your husband Rozneg allow someone to do this?”
Mirina fell silent, bent down to the buckets full of water to hang them on the carrying pole. Ladomira closely watched her movements. Now the girl was about to lift the carrying pole on her shoulder and then... The bucket slipped off the carrying pole, fell to the ground, sprinkling the grass with cold lake water.
And then Mirina could not resist and burst into tears.
“Father desires, so that I marry the Desyatnik...” she admitted with difficulty. “That Desyatnik’s name is Luchezar,” the young beauty continued to sob. “He is ten years older than me! And I don't like him at all! I love Peresvet! I can't live without him! But the father does not want to hear about him!”
Ladomira, struck by the girl's sincere words, was confused. Then, pulling herself together, she approached her and hugged her.
“I heard about Luchezar from my husband... He is the experienced Desyatnik, the good man... He is wise by life experience, reliable... No wonder your father chose him... Luchezar will become a good husband for you...”
“Well!” Mirina burst into sobs again, already beginning to calm down. “And you say the same! I do not like him! I do not like! Don't you yourself know how it happens? The soul flies like a bird to Peresvet!”
