All matter, from planets to viruses, is constructed from atoms, molecules or ions in some combination or other. But what are atoms, molecules and ions? This book attempts to answer that question, and in doing so it will explain in some detail the link between the structure of matter on the small scale (submicroscopic) and its large-scale (macroscopic) properties. An understanding of how changes at the atomic, ionic and molecular level result in changes you can see at the macroscopic level has enabled us to develop materials with almost whatever properties we want.
