Abstract: This paper departs from the fact that The Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston and Bone by Fae Myenne Ng assign spacious room for secrets and silences, respectively domestic as well as public, emphasizing among other things that children pick them up from their parents. However, it puts forward the assumption that the portrayal of secrecy is anything but the same in such fictional works, which pertain to a broad Chinese American tradition and yet are totally diverse at the level of examining silences. Beyond a few parallel statements about secrecy as a learning-teaching process, The Woman Warrior and Bone evoke different responses to the concealment and disclosure of secrets. I argue that Ng almost directly invalidates the earlier "double-voiced" structure appropriated by Kingston through her multiple renderings of a Hesterian tale about rape, adultery, and ostracism. In her Bone, the seclusion of the covert is mirrored as corrective or remedying, at times protective, rather than destructive.
