Jean-Jacques Rousseau was arguably one of the most influential French philosophers of the 18th century.  Profession of Faith of a Sayovard Vicar was the last section of his book Emile.  Although intended as a defense of religion, both Catholic and Protestant leadership were outraged, and his books were banned in France and Geneva.
